Lady Is a Vamp
Dark and dramatic
doesn't have to mean one-dimensional, makeup artist Michael Anthony
says. Exfoliate lips with a soft toothbrush or a sugar scrub, hydrate
with a balm, and blot using a piece of paper—not a tissue, which can
leave fuzzy particles behind. Next, fill in your entire mouth with a
bold berry hue (like Maybelline New York Lip Studio Color Blur Matte Lip Pencil in Plum, Please),
blot, and reapply. Between each layer, use the silicone tip at the
opposite end of the pencil to press the creamy formula into your pout.
"It's not about swiping—it's about pushing the pigment into the lips so
that the color is saturated and stays put," Anthony explains. To create
the illusion of fullness, run a short band of bright red (like Maybelline New York Lip Studio Color Blur in Partner in Crimson) horizontally across the center of your mouth and blend it toward the perimeter with the smudger.

Her look is like a
fresh bottle of cava: festive and fancy, yet totally unfussy. For fêtes
where the bubbly is flowing, stick to a shine-free ruby lip color (like Maybelline New York Lip Studio Color Blur Matte Lip Pencil in Partner in Crimson).
"Matte lipstick stays put much longer than glossy formulas," says
Anthony, who gravitates toward blue-based reds that make teeth appear
whiter. To plump up your pout, line the perimeter with a lip pencil
that's slightly darker than your lipstick—tracing just outside your
natural shape. "I like to split the difference between going right under
the roll of the lip and right past it," Anthony says. Using the same
liner, fill in the outer corners of your mouth to create depth, then
blend the liner with the smudging end of the Color Blur crayon toward
the center of your pout "so that the transition is smooth and lips look
less drawn-on," adds the pro. Color in the entire lip with the creamy,
pointed tip, blot, and add another layer to make your mouth mistletoe
proof. As a finishing touch, give the inner corners of eyes the gilt
trip with a shimmery gold shadow.

Forgo the standard pink-and-white polish combo for a blood-red hue, such as Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in Lady Is A Tramp. Add a sliver of negative space, as Kawajiri did here, for some modern French flair.

Instantly upgrade a
center-parted pony with an LBB (aka a little black bow). "The ribbon we
used was about three feet long," Nielsen says. "After you tie a bow, the
tails should graze the end of your ponytail." For ribbon like this,

The '70s were alive and well on the runway at Jonathan Saunders, Balmain, and Alberta Ferretti for spring '16. To lend your holiday look some Studio 54 pizzazz, balance high-shine eyes and nails with a semi-matte mouth. Layer a metallic spice or copper lipstick under a "veil" of pink . "It's almost like toning your hair color," Anthony explains. "This approach leaves you with a multidimensional satin finish." To apply glitter to eyes minus major fallout, warm up a clear lip balm between your thumb and forefinger, dab it across lids, and use your pointer finger to pick up the shiny particles and tap them in place. Anthony applied a chunky glitter first to "fill in any gaps."

The key to applying
glitter polish: Don't swipe—dab. "It's almost stamping," Kawajiri says
of her technique. Achieving a manicure reminiscent of a disco ball
requires only one coat of OPI Nail Lacquer in Desperately Seeking Sequins;
getting it off, however, demands more patience. Soak a cotton ball in
polish remover and let it sit on the surface of your nail for at least
two minutes before pulling it off. Still have sparkles left? Lightly
exfoliate the surface with a buffing block and repeat the process.
