More than one year after "Celebgate" or "The Fappening" took place—in which hackers leaked racy photos of stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, Kaley Cuoco and more—another celebrity could soon be facing the same fate.
Apple really needs to shore up its iCloud security.
Supermodel Gigi Hadid is reportedly being blackmailed by phone hackers, who claim to have obtained her private photos via Apple's iCloud storage service.
TMZ reports that the hackers are threatening to release the photos online unless the 20-year-old model agrees to pay a sum.
For her part, the blond beauty is refusing to give in to their demands, and she's currently working with police and private investigators to find the culprits.
Last year, the Fappening made headlines around the world and started a conversation about sexting, privacy and violation in the digital age.
While some people took the standard "blame-the-victim" stance, claiming that if you take nude photos you get what you're asking for (ugh), many condemned the photo leak as well as those who shared the photos.
Lena Dunham asked people on Twitter not to view the pictures, saying that looking at them "violates these woman over and over again," while Jennifer Lawrence in an interview with Vanity Fair called the leak a "sex crime" and a "sexual violation."
Jennifer added, "Anybody who looked at those pictures, you're perpetuating a sexual offense. You should cower with shame."
Where something like this would have been considered a shameful scandal in the past, public opinion is now rallying around these women. We understand that stealing private photos and sharing them or threatening to share them is a sex crime involving theft and exploitation.
We hope Gigi catches these dirtbags!
